Echocardiograms

DESCRIPTION OF PROCEDURE

The Echocardiogram or ECHO is essential in examining the physical structure of the heart. Utilizing state-of-the-art cardiac imaging technology, two-dimensional images are recorded of the patients’ cardiac physiology and function, in addition to the blood flow within the heart. With the capturing of high frame rate color mapping and harmonic mode, the physician is able to diagnose any irregularities within the patients’ heart in real-time.

PROCESS OUTLINE

Echo-cardiographer uses a transducer to record images of the patients heart at varying points from the neck, chest and abdomen

  • Echo gel and electrodes/wires are applied to reduce friction and facilitate higher quality images
  • Technologist will be instructing the patient to lie down in certain positions (on back or side, etc.)
  • Duration of test is approximately 30-45 minutes

INDICATIONS FOR TESTING

  • Dizziness/Fainting
  • Shortness of breath/Dyspnea
  • Transient Ischemia episodes
  • Murmurs
  • Valve disease
  • History of rheumatic fever
  • LV function
  • Post myocardial infarction
